Excommuncations in the Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska

Via A Catholic Mom in Hawaii, A Catholic Life

"LINCOLN (SNR) - In early 1996, Bishop Fabian W. Bruskewitz received a letter notifying him that a local Call to Action (CTA) chapter had been formed in the Diocese of Lincoln. Two weeks later, on March 19, Bishop Bruskewitz issued a statement of Extrasynodal Legislation, which was published in the Southern Nebraska Register.

Citing Call to Action, Call to Action Nebraska and 10 other organizations, Bishop Bruskewitz wrote, “Membership in these organizations or groups is always perilous to the Catholic faith and most often is totally incompatible with the Catholic faith.”

Catholics who had such memberships were invited to remove themselves from the organizations and seek the Sacrament of Reconciliation so that they could return to full communion with the Catholic Church. Those who refused to do so within a month were automatically excommunicated."

Official Statement

Statement issued by Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz (published in Southern Nebraska Register, March 22, 1996)

All Catholics in and of the Diocese of Lincoln are forbidden to be members of the organizations and groups listed below. Membership in these organizations or groups is always perilous to the Catholic Faith and most often is totally incompatible with the Catholic Faith.

Any Catholic in and of the Diocese of Lincoln who attain or retain membership in any of the above listed organizations or groups after April 15, 1996, are by that very fact (ipso facto latae sententiae) under interdict and are absolutely forbidden to receive Holy Communion. Contumacious persistence in such membership for one month following the interdict on part of any such Catholics will by that very fact (ipso facto latae sententiae) cause them to be excommunicated. Absolution from these ecclesial censures is "reserved to the Bishop."

This notice, when published in the Southern Nebraska Register, is a formal canonical warning.

By mandate of the Most Reverend Bishop of Lincoln.

Reverend Monsignor Timothy Thorburn, Chancellor March 19, 1996

Hi,
..hmmm!!!! TROY fell with the entry of the Trojan Horse....computers 'crash' with the various 'Trojan viruses'........but the SSPX will NOT "fall or crash" with virus like you, Paul!!!

Don't be a "PRETENDER".

Hey, I've mentioned in my previous post that blogging will be a little slow. I was all ready to write a defense of the society- after this Friday- by citing the fact that with SV2, the term excommunication should be hardly used and that if we can have dialogues/ecumenism with the Protestant denominations why can't we do the same with the Catholic SSPX. And on this, I was also going to post a recent photo of what real ecumenism and christian charity is. But if you insist that I'm a "virus" or a "pretender", so be it. I can just tell you that I'm dissapointed with the comments you made.

You know what, since I can't help and since my actions aren't doing any good... I wash my hands clean. My position on the Society will not change, as will my opinion on the Society priests I've met so far, however, I'll leave it to individuals like youself to 'fight your own battle'. Once again, I dissapointed to receive such a comment.

Firstly I'm not the first anonymous "poster".

Now pls tell us exactly the 'actions" you've 'acted" that cld have done good........Pontius Pilate washed his hands, so do Muslims before they go on a Jihad.
Some people may feel the priests of SSPX are gullible. let's put it-they are not wordly.
Are you a pyschic, or did Our Blessed Mother "bow" herself to you this time ,to tell you that Anonymous was fighting a battle within him/herself?? I applaud Anonymous 1 for not mincing his/her words
Wake up,not everybody is asleep.............

Anonymous 1 and Anonymous 2, your insipid comments leaves much to be desired. If you have nothing positive or constructive to contribute to a religious blog such as this, then in all good conscience cut out the senseless name calling and insults or STAY OUT! Both of you are merely cowards; if you have strong sentiments on an issue, show yourselves and email Paul directlly.
The rest of us who have benefited from Deo-Juvante would advise Paul to ignore postings from people ( like Anonymous)with sinister agendas.....

While the comments left by those anonymous antagonists are truly lamentable, methinks Paul could have done a little more in this blog entry. It does not take more than half a minute to add something like: "I don't think it is correct and/or fair to group the SSPX with the others in the same list, but I can only explain why in my next entry in a few days' time."

Paul deserves the benefit of the doubt. At the same time, I am hoping that the omission of the caveat will not serve to spread the erroneous notion that the SSPX is "schismatic/excommunicated".

I see that the anonymous troll disease that attacked Kenny's blog are at work here as well...although this time, he sounds like he's of the pro-SSPX camp. Well, what can I say, this disease seems to afflict anyone from any camp... heh..

Referring to one of the comments above, if the SSPX is 'schismatic/excommunicated' thus it would mean they are outside the Church. If they are outside the Church it would mean they are of another Church/religion. If they are of another Church/religion, ecumenical dialogue can be applied to them. However, didn't Cardinal Cassidy terms the SSPX case as an "internal issue of the Catholic Church", thus ecumenical dialogue does not apply to the SSPX? If it is an internal issue, then how can the SSPX be considered outside the Church?
