The Source of True Joy is in the Interior of Each Human Person
By: Fr Marcial Maciel, LC (from the letter of March 10, 1981)
I ask Christ to give you the gift of understanding the interior life deeply and clearly, of loving it with authentic longing, and of living it vigorously, fully and enthusiastically. This will allow you to climb unsuspected heights of holiness, joy, peace and fruitfulness, and it will lift you always above the cloying mud of the world, where all is concupiscence of the flesh, concupiscence of the eyes and pride of life (cfr 1 Jn 2:16).
So, clearly aware of your Christian vocation and your mission, set about strengthening your souls, nourishing them well every day so they will always be vigorous and healthy. How could you expect to grow in virtue and apostolic zeal if all you feed your soul on is the latest scandalous gossip, trivial entertainment, empty chatter, inanities, worldly vanity and the smoke of the world? Frivolity has ever been the corrupter of souls.
The source of true joy is in the interior of each human person, where God is peace, joy, happiness and serenity for those who live in his friendship rather than in external things, in the vanities of the world, in its pointless and passing joys, in its plastic smiles, in our capacity for enjoying pleasures. And so I recommend that you develop a strong interior life, a strong life of union with God, a notable ability to go within yourselves, a significant increase in depth, because that is where you can truly find happiness.
