An Invitation: An Evening with the Fraternity of Altar Servers
St. John Berchman, patron of Altar ServersDear Friends-in-Christ,
"The beauty of the liturgy is part of this mystery; it is a sublime expression of God's glory and, in a certain sense, a glimpse of heaven on earth. ... Beauty, then, is not mere decoration, but rather an essential element of the liturgical action, since it is an attribute of God himself and his revelation. These considerations should make us realize the care which is needed, if the liturgical action is to reflect its innate splendour." H.H. Pope Benedict XVI, Sacramentum Caritatis.
The Fraternity of Altar Servers was recently formed to foster bonds and windows of interactive learning amongst Altar Servers in the Archdiocese of Singapore. Under the spiritual directorship of Rev. Fr. Gerard Weerakoon, we seek to organize reverent celebrations of the Sacred Liturgy for the glory of God and deepen the spiritual and catechical understanding of the Sacred Mysteries of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass of all who are present. We desire that our liturgies and fraternal atmosphere will inspire many young men (altar servers or otherwise) to the holy order of priesthood.
Our young Fraternity is currently represented by the twelve following parishes: Christ the King, St. Joseph’s (Victoria St.), Holy Family, Holy Trinity, St. Francis Xavier’s, Holy Spirit, St. Mary of the Angels, St. Stephen’s, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Bernadette’s, Immaculate Heart of Mary and Ss. Peter and Paul.
Our inaugural Mass will be celebrated on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Do join us if you can; the Mass is offered for all secondary and tertiary students throughout the various institutions of learning across Singapore (among other intentions).
All altar servers, aspirants to the Diocesan Priesthood, and Seminarians are cordially invited to come and serve in their cassock/alb; as the (22) active roles have already been taken, all other servers will 'serve from the pews'. Dinner will be provided after the Mass and all are welcomed to join in fellowship. Do send me an email to let me know if you wish to serve.
14 Sep 2007, Friday
Solemn Mass
Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
1830hr
Church of St. Francis Xavier
N.B. All Masses organized by the Fraternity adhere strictly to the norms set out in the General Instructions to the Roman Missal Ceremonies of the Modern Roman Rite.
"By praying the Psalms, the Scripture readings and the readings drawn from the great tradition which are included in the Divine Office, we can come to a deeper experience of the Christ-event and the economy of salvation, which in turn can enrich our understanding and participation in the celebration of the Eucharist." H.H. Pope Benedict XVI, Sacramentum Caritatis.
Hence, do join us in our evening sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to God for our redemption by praying the office of Vespers with us as well.

In the Eucharistic Lord,
Paul D. Molina

Gregorian Chant- February
(English/Latin)
Feast of the Chair of Peter
22 February, Thursday
8.00 pm
Chapel,
Church of St Teresa (Note the change in location)
This mass will be sung largely in English. The use of chant is not limited to the Latin language. In fact, a worthy and reverent celebration of the Mass can be conducted in English. We will be using chants set to English translations of scripture. These chants are simple, accessible, yet befitting the solemnity that the Mass deserves. We hope that you can join us in this Encounter with the Lord. Please note the change in location, we will be using the chapel used for weekday Masses, and not the main church.
Liturgy of the Hours
Vespers and Compline
(sung in Latin, translations provided)
25 February, Sunday
8.00 pm
Adoration Chapel,
Church of Sts Peter and Paul
An excerpt from the General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours:
27. Lay groups gathering for prayer, apostolic work, or any other reason are encouraged to fulfill the Church's duty, by celebrating part of the liturgy of the hours. The laity must learn above all how in the liturgy they are adoring God the Father in spirit and in truth; they should bear in mind that through public worship and prayer they reach all humanity and can contribute significantly to the salvation of the whole world.

Lenten Stations of the Cross
With these stations, Catholics are able to “meditate on the sufferings and to follow the journey of our Lord Jesus Christ up to Calvary,” Rev. Fr. Lawrence Yeo, Rt. Parish Priest, Saint Joseph's Church, Bukit Timah. The Holy Season of Lent approaches and once again we find ourselves close to the threshold of our Salvation- Holy Week. It was during this time that our Lord instituted the Most Holy Eucharist on Maundy Thursday, endured His Sorrowful Passion and Crucifixion on Good Friday, Descended into the dead on Holy Saturday and Ascended gloriously on Easter Sunday.
I'm of the recommendation of walking the 14 Stations of the Cross during Lent. This has been the principle and traditional Catholic way of preparing for Good Friday. Each Station depicts a significant event of Our Lord's journey up Mount Calvary.
A Candlelight prayer walk will be organized to journey the 14 life-sized Stations of the Cross.
Do consider this walk. Use it as a time of reflection and spiritual growth. Make it an opportunity to evangelize by bringing a friend along.
The Stations never fail to evoke one's emotions and generate increased reciprocal love for Christ. Last year’s 'pilgrims' can attest to the Stations!
I also want to encourage Protestants and non-Christians to walk the Stations. The only reason I can give to justify my asking is my firm conviction in the Spirit. That it will touch and illuminate the hearts of all who journey with Jesus.
The set date & time has been set on 10th March '07, Saturday at 1700hr.
There will also be the veneration of the Reliquary Cross after the Stations.
Interested parties may send me an E-mail. Details will be disseminated via e-mail upon receipt.
Have a great Feast of the Presentation of the Lord today!
ABOUT THE WAY OF THE CROSS:
Among the devotional exercises which have for their object meditation on the Passion, Crucifixion, and Death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, one of the chief has been the exercise commonly called the Way of the Cross. This devotion first arose in Jerusalem, among the Christians who dwelt there, out of veneration for those sacred places which were sanctified by the suffering of our divine Redeemer. From that time, as we learn from St. Jerome, Christians visited the holy places in crowds. The gathering of the faithful, he says, even from the farthest corners of the earth, to visit the holy places, continued to his own times. From Jerusalem this devout exercise began to be introduced in Europe by various pious and holy persons, who had traveled to the Holy Land to satisfy their devotion. Pope Clement XII extended this devotion to the whole Catholic world.

The Spear Of Longinus
It is interesting to note that there are 'two' spears of Longinus. One in Rome and one in Vienna. Mother Church has the authentic relic, and it's enshrined on the altar of St. Peter's Basilica. The other, its history traced and authenticated by General Patton, resides in the Hofburg Museum in Vienna (The one on display now at the National Museum).
Some people dispute that the Lance in the picture above is the authentic relic. Whatever the truth, just make a trip down to the museum and view the exhibit. It's the next closest to the one in St. Peter's anyway. You'll also get to see the (1st class) Relic of St. Francis- Heart tissue, along with the uniforms of the Knights of the Order of St. Stephen.

Events for January
This is what the Second Vatican Council had to say about Gregorian Chant:
116. The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as specially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services.
